Preparing The Area For Your New Brick Or Paver Installation

In the world of landscaping, particularly in regions like Georgia with its distinct soil compositions and climatic conditions, the success of a paver installation often hinges on the initial steps: proper site preparation. The foundation of any lasting hardscape begins beneath the surface, and without meticulous groundwork, even the most beautiful pavers can fall prey to shifting, settling, or even early degradation.

Georgia's landscape is characterized by a mixture of clay rich soils, which can present challenges in terms of drainage and stability. These soils can expand when wet and contract when dry, posing potential threats to the longevity and integrity of paver installations. Proper site preparation involves excavating to the correct depth, ensuring a solid base, and employing the right materials like crushed stone or gravel. This compacted base layer, followed by appropriate sand bedding, ensures that pavers have a stable, well-draining foundation. The preparation aids in preventing issues like pooling water, which can lead to erosion or the growth of unsightly and slippery algae or moss on the pavers.

Moreover, in the fluctuating temperatures of Georgia's seasons, from hot, humid summers to cooler winters, the thermal expansion and contraction can test the endurance of any hardscape. Proper site preparation acts as a buffer, absorbing these stresses and ensuring the pavers remain flat, aligned, and beautiful for years to come. In essence, the longevity, beauty, and safety of a paver installation in Georgia are deeply rooted in the diligence of its foundational preparation.

How Do We Prepare Your Ground For Pavers?

Installing paver patios, driveways, and walkways isn't rocket science but there are some very specific steps and processes that separate the good installations from the poor installations.

Step #1.  The first thing we need to do is measure and mark the area where your pavers will be installed. Using a string line and stakes to mark the perimeter of the area, and spray paint or flags to mark the locations of any corners, curves, or other features.

Step #2.  We will need to remove any existing vegetation or debris from the area so we have a clean slate. We then need to excavate the area to the desired depth for your specific pavers and the base materials we'll be using.  This can vary depending on the pavers being used and other factors.

Step #3.  Excavate the area to the desired depth. The depth of the excavation will depend on the thickness of the pavers and the height of any surrounding surfaces, such as a patio or walkway. Be sure to allow for the thickness of the base material and any sand or other materials that will be used to level the surface.

Step #4.  We need to add base materials to the excavated area.  This usually consists of a layer of crushed gravel followed with a later of sand.  The gravel helps to establish solid footing for the pavers and provide drainage, while the sand provides a level surface that easily be adjusted as we install the pavers.  Each layer must be compacted using hand tampers or a machine tamper to prevent future settling.

Step #5.  We then install any necessary edging. Edging, such as metal or plastic strips, is used to hold the pavers in place and to define the edge of the paver area. Edging is installed around the perimeter of the paver area and is secured with stakes or other fasteners depending on the paver manufacturer.

Step #6.  Install the pavers. We begin at one corner of the paver area and work our way outward, laying the pavers in a pattern that is consistent with your design. We use a rubber mallet to tap the pavers into place, and we use a level to ensure that the pavers are level and even.  We can adjust the base layer as necessary to ensure everything is level.

As you can see, by spending the extra time on site preparation, you're getting a superior installation that will last and look good for many years to come.

How Our Paver Patio Construction Process Works

Questions About Paver Installations?

Get your questions about paver installation answered here!

Given Georgia's humid summers and temperate winters, it's vital to choose pavers that can withstand the fluctuating conditions. Materials like concrete and brick pavers are popular in Georgia because of their durability and resistance to the region's specific weather patterns. Additionally, these materials provide versatility in design, ensuring your installation remains both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Georgia's clay-rich soil can expand when wet and contract when dry, potentially leading to shifting or uneven pavers over time. At Razor Sharp Lawn & Landscape, we prioritize meticulous site preparation to address this. By establishing a solid base layer and ensuring proper drainage, we mitigate the challenges posed by Georgia's unique soil composition, ensuring your installation remains stable and long-lasting.

Rain can lead to potential issues like erosion or water pooling on your pavers. Regularly inspect your installation for any signs of water accumulation and ensure that the drainage system remains unclogged. Using a gentle pressure wash periodically can also help remove any debris or algae growth, maintaining the beauty and safety of your pavers during the wetter months.

It's natural for some paver materials to experience slight fading with prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. However, by selecting quality pavers with UV-resistant properties and occasionally applying a protective sealant, you can significantly reduce the effects of UV-induced color fading, ensuring your pavers retain their vibrancy for years.

Given the state's specific soil characteristics, a foundation comprising a compacted layer of crushed stone followed by a bedding of sand is ideal. This combination provides stability, ensuring the pavers remain flat and aligned, and offers excellent drainage, an essential feature given Georgia's regular rainfalls.

The duration varies based on the project's size and complexity. However, thanks to Georgia's generally mild climate, we can often work year-round, reducing potential weather-related delays. For a standard patio or driveway, expect the project to span several days, including site preparation and the actual laying of pavers.

For driveways, it's vital to select pavers that can endure the consistent weight and movement of vehicles. Concrete pavers are a top choice in Georgia, given their strength, durability, and ability to handle the stress of vehicular traffic without cracking or becoming dislodged.

Georgia's warmth and humidity can encourage weed growth between paver joints. To minimize this, we recommend using a polymeric sand for filling paver joints. This specialized sand creates a semi-solid bond when wet, making it harder for weeds to penetrate. Regular maintenance, including sweeping and occasional pressure washing, can also keep your patio looking pristine.

The key to preventing sinking lies in robust site preparation. Given Georgia's clayey soil, we emphasize the importance of a compacted gravel base, sometimes deeper than standard recommendations, ensuring stability. Proper edge restraints and ensuring that water drains away from the driveway can also prevent shifting or sinking.

Georgia's outdoor lifestyle means BBQs, gatherings, and the occasional spill. For most spills on a paver patio, a simple mixture of mild detergent and water, along with gentle scrubbing, works wonders. For oil stains, you might consider a specialized cleaning solution available at local home improvement stores.

In Georgia's climate, with its combination of sun and rain, we recommend resealing your paver walkway every 3-5 years. This not only maintains its appearance but also offers protection against the elements, enhancing its longevity.

Matt was always prompt on returning texts and always showed up when he said he would. Matt and Kelley worked hard everyday leveling our yard moving dirt cutting down trees and digging up stumps. They prepped everything, built a curved retaining wall, built a fence, put down sod, and put down gravel for a cornhole court. They turned our ugly backyard into a yard we can now truly enjoy. Great to work with. Thanks!

My wife and I called Matt's company, Razor Sharp Lawn and Landscape after reading some testimonials. We had a retaining wall project and we had specific plans on how we wanted it to look. Matt showed up On Time. That, in itself showed he was professional. When we all agreed on the landscape of the project, we hired him. The pictures show and exemplify the workmanship his team possessed when the job was completed. We highly recommend Matt for all your outdoor projects. Gregory and Bernarda Johnson
